How to Install a Printer Driver on Windows 10 & 11 (Any Brand)
Installing the right printer driver is essential for getting the most out of your printer โ without the full driver package you miss scanning functions, ink monitoring, maintenance utilities, and advanced print settings. Here is how to install printer drivers correctly on Windows 10 and Windows 11 for every major brand.
Method 1: Windows Automatic Driver Install
Windows 10 and 11 automatically download and install basic drivers for most printers when you add them. Go to Settings โ Bluetooth & devices โ Printers & scanners โ Add device. Windows searches for nearby printers and installs drivers automatically via Windows Update. This works for most modern printers but does not always install the full feature software โ you may miss scanning, ink monitoring, and maintenance functions that require the manufacturer's complete software package.
Method 2: Download from Manufacturer Website (Recommended)
For full functionality always download drivers directly from the manufacturer website. This installs all features not just basic printing. HP: support.hp.com โ enter model โ Software, Drivers and Firmware โ Full Feature Software and Drivers. Canon: usa.canon.com/support โ enter model โ Drivers & Downloads. Epson: epson.com/support โ enter model โ Drivers โ Printer Driver. Brother: support.brother.com โ select product โ Downloads โ Full Driver & Software Package. Always download for your specific Windows version โ Windows 10 and Windows 11 drivers are usually the same but some older printers have separate downloads.
How to Install the Driver Correctly
Before installing the new driver, remove any existing driver completely to prevent conflicts. Go to Control Panel โ Programs โ Uninstall a Program. Find every item related to your printer manufacturer โ HP, Canon, Epson, or Brother โ and uninstall them all. Restart your computer. Run the downloaded installer file as Administrator (right-click โ Run as administrator). Follow the setup wizard โ it will ask you to connect your printer via USB or WiFi during installation. Complete the wizard and run a test print to confirm everything is working. If the printer is not connecting during setup, see our WiFi setup guide.
Fix: Printer Driver Unavailable Error
If Windows shows "Printer driver is unavailable": right-click Start โ Device Manager โ Printers โ right-click your printer โ Update driver โ Search automatically for updated driver software. If that does not work: right-click the printer โ Uninstall device โ tick "Delete the driver software for this device" โ Uninstall โ restart โ reinstall from the manufacturer website. This fully removes the corrupted driver before reinstalling a fresh copy.
Fix: Driver Installation Fails
If the driver installer fails: run it as Administrator (right-click โ Run as administrator). Temporarily disable antivirus software during installation โ security software sometimes incorrectly blocks driver installations. Ensure Windows Update is fully up to date before installing drivers โ some printer drivers require recent Windows components. If the printer still will not install, try the Windows automatic method first (Method 1) to check if basic connectivity works, then install the full manufacturer driver on top.
How to Update Printer Drivers on Windows 11
To update existing drivers without a full reinstall: go to Device Manager (right-click Start โ Device Manager) โ Printers โ right-click your printer โ Update driver โ Search automatically. Windows checks for updates via Windows Update. For manufacturers not covered by Windows Update, visit the manufacturer website for the latest driver. Keeping drivers current prevents the offline errors and printing failures that commonly follow Windows Updates. For HP-specific printer issues after a driver update see our HP not printing fix guide. For Epson driver issues see our Epson troubleshooting guide.
Check Your Currently Installed Driver Version
To check your current driver version: Control Panel โ Devices and Printers โ right-click your printer โ Printer properties โ Advanced tab. The driver name and version are shown here. Compare this against the latest version listed on the manufacturer's website to determine if an update is needed. Drivers more than 12 months old are worth updating even if the printer appears to be working โ newer drivers often improve performance, fix intermittent issues, and add compatibility with new Windows features.
