Paper Jam? How to Clear It Without Tearing or Damaging Anything
Paper jams happen to every printer eventually. The good news: most are easy to fix in under five minutes. The bad news: removing paper incorrectly can damage your printer permanently. Here is the safe way to fix a paper jam for any printer brand โ and how to prevent them from happening again.
Before You Start โ Important Safety Rules
Turn the printer off before removing jammed paper. Never pull paper out forcefully โ if it does not move easily you will tear it and leave fragments inside that cause the next jam. Never use scissors, knives, or sharp objects inside the printer. Use both hands and pull paper slowly and evenly in the direction the paper normally exits โ usually forward out the front of the printer. Pulling against the paper path risks damaging rollers and internal components.
Step 1: Identify Where the Jam Is
Most printers display an error code or diagram on the screen showing where the jam is located. Common jam locations include: input tray (paper did not feed in properly), inside the printer body (paper stalled mid-feed), output tray area (paper almost exited but stopped), and the duplex unit at the rear (on models with automatic double-sided printing). Check all of these locations โ a single jam can bridge across multiple areas.
Step 2: Remove Paper from Input Tray
Remove all paper from the input tray. Check for torn pieces, bent sheets, foreign objects, or paper loaded incorrectly. Fan the remaining paper stack before replacing it โ static electricity causes sheets to stick together and feed multiple pages simultaneously, which is a common cause of jams. Ensure paper is aligned with the guides and loaded below the maximum fill line marker.
Step 3: Remove Paper from Inside the Printer
Open all printer doors and access covers โ most printers have a front access area and a rear access door specifically for jam removal. Look carefully in all accessible areas using a torch if needed. Grip the jammed paper with both hands and pull slowly and steadily in the direction the paper travels. If the paper tears, locate every fragment before closing the printer โ even a small scrap left inside causes another immediate jam. For Epson jams see our Epson fix guide. For HP jams see our HP fix guide.
Step 4: Check the Rear Access Door
Most inkjet and laser printers have a rear access panel or door specifically for paper jam removal. Open it and look for jammed paper. Pulling from the rear is often easier and safer than pulling from the front because you are pulling in the natural direction of paper travel rather than against it. Some printers require pressing tabs on both sides of the rear panel simultaneously to open it.
Step 5: Check and Clean the Feed Rollers
Once the jammed paper is fully removed, inspect the paper feed rollers for torn paper fragments, dust, or glazing. The rollers are the rubber wheels that pull paper from the tray into the printer. Dirty or worn rollers are the most common cause of repeated paper jams. Clean accessible rollers with a lint-free cloth very slightly dampened with water โ not alcohol which can damage rubber. If jams occur frequently despite proper paper loading, the rollers likely need replacement โ contact the manufacturer's service line for roller replacement kits.
How to Prevent Future Paper Jams
Always use the correct paper type and weight for your printer โ check the manual for supported specifications. Never load wrinkled, damp, torn, or previously printed paper that may have curl from heat. Store paper in its original packaging away from humidity. Always fan paper before loading. Never overfill the paper tray. Clean the feed rollers with a slightly damp cloth every few months. If you are having persistent jam problems despite following these steps, your printer may be reaching the end of its reliable service life โ see our best home printers guide for current replacement recommendations.
